Since 1972, AASCD has been the professional home for Alabama’s curriculum and instructional leaders. We unite leaders from all levels — elementary to high school — into a statewide network built on professional learning, advocacy, and connection.
However, over the past several months, you may have noticed a subtle shift in how we’ve been talking about the future of Alabama ASCD. Since September 2024, we’ve been teasing that something new was on the horizon. This was not just a refresh, but an evolution. Today, we’re excited to officially introduce that next chapter: Alabama SAIL, the Statewide Alliance of Instructional Leaders.
This rebrand is about far more than a new name or logo. It reflects a thoughtful, strategic decision to ensure our organization remains relevant, resilient, and deeply connected to the real needs of Alabama’s educators for years to come.
In recent years, ASCD at the national level merged with ISTE, bringing changes in focus, structure, and membership models. As those shifts took place, it became clear that Alabama ASCD no longer fit neatly within the national framework. Rather than reaffiliate or dilute our mission, your board made a bold, forward-thinking choice to reestablish the organization as a stand-alone, statewide nonprofit built specifically to serve Alabama’s instructional leaders.
That decision presented both a challenge and an opportunity. How do you honor decades of trust, credibility, and relationships while also creating a brand that reflects who you are now and where you are headed?
The answer is Alabama SAIL.
The name itself was intentionally developed to be memorable, meaningful, and ownable. “SAIL” reflects momentum, direction, and progress, which is a fitting metaphor for leaders navigating constant change in curriculum, policy, and expectations. Just as importantly, it stands for Statewide Alliance of Instructional Leaders, clearly and confidently defining who we serve and how we serve them.
While our name and visual identity have evolved, our commitment has not. We remain dedicated to excellence, advocacy, adaptability, and stewardship, and to helping instructional leaders across Alabama learn, grow, and thrive.
This is not a departure from who we’ve been. It is a clearer expression of who we are and a confident step forward into what comes next.

At its core, SAIL is about being a bridge. It connects instructional leaders to one another, to the State Department, and to the ideas and resources shaping education across Alabama. We believe leadership is people-first work, and every program, conversation, and resource we offer is designed to ensure leaders feel supported, informed, and empowered.
